Soft power – a silent battle for hearts and minds, 2020
Mixed media. Old textiles, embroideries, newspapers, performance. Variable dimensions.
Solo show in Politiken’s Forhal, Copenhagen, Denmark. A comprehensive total installation in- and outside of the Politiken newspaper headquarters.
The starting point of the exhibition is words. Based on a number of statements all centered around language, its possibilities, power and pitfalls, the exhibition demonstrates that those who possess language have the right to define, categorize, write, hush up, speak out.
The exhibition title refers to a “soft power” (language, media, culture), which in opposition to e.g. a hard-economic power, aims to conquer “hearts” and “minds” by affecting attitudes, relations and actions. The artist duo has worked directly and interactively with Politiken’s Hus, and the exhibition consequently expands over both an installation, a performance in Forhallen, messages running on Politiken’s four LED signs across the city and a new flag on top of the Politiken’s headquarters.
As a prelude to the exhibition, Politiken launched a series of five broadsheet artworks in the printed newspaper in the spring of 2020. Pages were covered in white paint on which handwritten sentences were hastily scribbled with a pencil. The pieces worked as a break or a visual intermezzo in the otherwise closely written newspaper – a disorderly interruption of the printed words. The sentences touched upon power and the potential for change inherent in language.
A series of five glicée prints in editions of 10 each are available for purchase at Politikens Forhal.
During the opening a performance took place in the large windows facing the City Hall Square.
The exhibition is generously supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, the Danish Art Workshops and leftover.dk.
