A reading festival at Blaagaard Theatre, Copenhagen, Denmark. Arranged by Marie Lydie-Nokouda, BLACK TO NORMAL.
BLACK TO NORMAL's first event Afro to the Future provides stage space for new, strong voices and presents a series of short dramatic texts rooted in afro-futurism.
BLACK TO NORMAL is initiated by Danish actor Marie Lydie-Nokouda. It is the first artistic platform in Denmark that purposefully works to cultivate and make visible the hidden talents within drama and performing arts that are found among Afro-Danes.
Afro to the Future consists of eight short readings of dramatic texts spread over two evenings.
Hesselholdt & Mejlvang are contributing with the visual universe that Afro to the Future takes place in.
The stage design aims at giving space to the power that lies in the narratives and the potential for empowerment via the symbolic action, the ritual that Afro to the Future can also be seen as. The room examines what afrofuturism can and what it means in this specific context. The objects of the stage thus connect the past with the present and turn the gaze towards the potent, bright future.
Texts by playwrights Saynab Farah Dahir, Hazel Watt, Choco Guilène, Mo Chara, Diêm Camille G., Sandra Mahmoud Lindquist, Rebecca Langley Jensen and Julie Deepawali.
