Longing for the Melting Pot, 2016

Cotton, acrylic paint. Six half-round flag buntings, each 80 x 153 cm.

Hanged from the ceiling, six half-round flag buntings pose nostalgically in a color scale, asserting some sort of festive atmosphere. The installation activates different conceptions of classifications, hierarchies, patriotism, and segregation, obscured by its humorous character and the piece’s title. It mixes different skin tones within each American flag, offering an abstract integration instead of segregation/division.
Skin color is an ever-present, controversial subject. It defines to some degree the possibilities of a human being and her/his role in society. These flags invite to a unification of all people, to embrace differences within society, to include and not exclude. The flags are a symbol of hope and love and a reminder to not surrender to fear of the unknown.
