The Two Fools In Search of a New Balance, 2023
Performance, duration 20 min. KØN Gender Museum Denmark, Aarhus, Denmark.
Performed by Sofie Hesselholdt and Vibeke Mejlvang.
At the inauguration of our digital artwork in AR MONUMENT OF EQUALITY at KØN - Gender Museum Denmark, the Two Fools appeared again.
The fools revolve around the longing for a new balance in the world, through rhymes and verses. A balance between all the genders.
The fools dream of a completely new equilibrium and justice, which can be created over time. And which can perhaps be sensed far out on the horizon if we look closely.
The fools call for battle and for truce, for community and action. They ramble and contradict themselves. They laugh, sing, and joke, but behind the funny mask, melancholy, despair, and fear loom.
The jester of the past performed at court, conveyed popular sentiment, delivered inconvenient truths to the king, and participated in political discussions. The jester could afford to be more outspoken than most at court and played a decisive role politically. In the same way, the two white fools entertain their audience while speaking out against rigid systems and insisting on complexity.
Included in United Change, which focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals in 17 works of art. The work is celebrating Equality and Equity - Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
The project is generously supported by the Danish Arts Foundation.
