Please rest in peace for we shall not repeat the error, 2018

Old textiles from different countries, embroidery. 220 × 366 cm. Letters (framed). 85 x 125 cm.

This quietly monumental tapestry unfolds as a patchwork, its surface embroidered with the work’s poignant title—borrowed from the inscription at the Flame of Peace memorial in Hiroshima, which commemorates the victims of the atomic bomb.
At the heart of this piece lies a global collaboration. The artists invited individuals from around the world to send them a piece of white fabric, each carrying personal history and emotional weight. These memory-laden textiles have been stitched together, their stories preserved in the form of accompanying letters. Among them, Maja Ciric from Serbia contributed a bedsheet, over a century old, with the word hope (in Serbian) embroidered onto it—an heirloom passed through generations. Victor Vidal from Peru donated a pillowcase inherited from his grandmother. As a child, he was the only one allowed to rest his head on it; his grandmother told him it would protect him from evil. Through these fragments of personal histories, the tapestry becomes a collective testimony—an attempt to mend the wounds of humanity’s past, acknowledging the cyclical nature of our missteps while striving for redemption. In its intricate, meditative stitching, the work embodies both resilience and remembrance.
