Native, Exotic, Normal, 2016

Mixed media. Variable dimensions.
Solo show, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen, Denmark.
The exhibition included two additional flag projects, Native, Exotic, Normal / Circle of Flags shown at Roskilde Festival and Native, Exotic, Normal / State of Emergency at the People's Political Meeting at Bornholm.

Native, Exotic, Normal transforms the galleries of Den Frie almost beyond recognition.
The exhibition focuses on how we understand people only from outer parameters such as ethnicity, looks and religion. Using the dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick’s scale of different skin types, Hesselholdt & Mejlvang look at six different nuances of skin color and question our stereotypical, normative way of thinking. The exhibition investigates in what way discrimination is an integrated part of our everyday lives. The exhibition is structured around Den Frie’s six galleries. In one comprehensive installation, Hesselholdt & Mejlvang approach an important issue that influences the broad discussion about refugees, foreigners, and our way of understanding and meeting the Others. The exhibition's point of departure is the eurocentrism that determines how we talk about, classify, identify and name one another, and how this understanding is based on ethnicity, skin color, nationality and religion. Each of the six galleries will present a critical comment on our general norms, prejudices and clichés as specific skin colors are encountered. In the exhibition Native, Exotic, Normal Hesselholdt & Mejlvang present an in-depth, reflected perspective on ethical categorization in our society.
The exhibition is supported by tthe Danish Arts Foundation, Københavns Kommunes Billedkunstudvalg, Fritz Hansen, Le Klint, Hansen & Andersen A/S, Stof & Stil.
