Native, Exotic, Normal / State of Emergency, 2017
Polyester, stained spruce wood. Flags: 170x225 cm. Poles: 270 cm.
The title Native, Exotic, Normal / State of Emergency is taken from the names paint dealers and the cosmetics industry give skin tones, where labels like Toffee, Native, Exotic, Peach and Normal expose our view of ourselves and others. These defining labels are in the title of the flag series combined with a situation of crisis. The installation consists of six flagpoles with a flag where the cross is reversed. Inverted flags are usually an international signal of an emergency situation, but here the flags also become a protest against nationalism and call for humanism.
